International Insurance Survey at Kola NPP

October 27-29, 2015 the experts from Russian, British Insurance Pools and Swiss Re-Insurance Company performed a scheduled insurance Survey to assess nuclear and fire safety level, risks of civil liability and material damage at Kola NPP.

In the framework of the Survey the experts for the first time focused on the safety culture at a Russian NPP.

The program of the Survey headed by Mr. Sergey Babenko, RANI, was rather intensive. The experts studied the documentation, interviewed the personnel, performed walkdowns of the buildings and facilities, equipment compartments; analyzed issues associated with nuclear and fire safety, management structure at NPP, personnel qualification level, assessed the equipment and the activity of NPP from the point of view of environment safety.

Mr. Michael Peach, the inspector of the British Insurance Pool, noted positive changes that took place at Kola NPP comparing to his last visit: “This is my third visit to this nuclear power plant. I must admit I always can see some improvements when I come here. The plant looks excellent, and due to modernization process, which is significantly invested, it performs in a safety way.”

106 events and activities in the framework of equipment modernization and reliability enhancement for the amount of 138,7 mln. USD were implemented only in 2014 at Kola NPP, and of course it allows to ensure safety level and substantial operation of the existing NPP units, meeting the criteria and requirements of the applicable standards and rules.

Chief Engineer of Kola NPP, Mr. V.A. Matveev, thanked the Survey team for their professionalism and for positive assessment of the facilities at the site, added that safety improvement is a continuous process and they will keep to this tendency in future.
