An International Insurance Survey at Kursk NPP

October 6-8, 2015, the experts of national nuclear insurance pools of the Russian Federation, China and Ukraine held a scheduled insurance Survey at Kursk NPP.

During the Survey the inspectors assessed the current insurance risks from the point of view of nuclear and radiation safety, operating process safety, fire protection, possible equipment failures.

More than 90 key issues relating to above mentioned risks had been analyzed during the Survey, including reliability and security rates of the equipment, statistics records of incidents and breakdowns at the NPP site since 2010, updated information on modernization program implementation, technical evaluation of the reactor graphite stacks and measures for keeping them in a proper technical condition, post-Fukushima activities performed at Kursk NPP, and so on.

It was noted that Kursk NPP successfully proceeded in the process of modernization and improvement of reliability of NPP. Investments to the modernization and the process of service life extension of NPP power units are valued at the amount of 47.6 billion rubles. More than 8 billion rubles of this amount was invested in 2014 and 2015. These funds are aimed to provide more than 300 events in the frame of six target technical programs.

During their walkdowns the Inspectors interviewed managers and specialists of operating departments. “The station is well prepared for the Survey and the staff worked hard to provide the experts with all technical documentation required during the Survey, - said Mr. S. V. Babenko, Technical Director of RANI. - Representatives of Kursk NPP created a friendly environment of cooperation for the members of the Inspection and gave all possible help and assistance. Everyone at the station was interested in interaction with the experts as well as in exchange of experience and point of view on different issues.”
