Nuclear safety and operations training Seminar

A training Seminar of technical specialists of the national nuclear insurance and reinsurance pools on "Nuclear safety and operations of nuclear power plants" was held June 29 - July 3, 2015.
The Seminar was organized by Nuclear Risk Insurers Ltd., UK, following the decision of the Engineering Forum and Technical Subcommittee meeting of the International nuclear insurance pooling system. The seminar was held at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford, UK.

Technical experts of the national insurance pools (the UK, Germany, USA, Russian Federation, Canada, Switzerland, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland), consulting companies and research organizations of the UK, as well as the representative of World Institute for Nuclear Security, the organization, the creation of which was initiated in 2008 at the IAEA General conference, attended the Seminar.

The representatives of RANI: Mr.A. Nikitin, Deputy technical director and Mr.V. Vashchilo, Deputy technical director, took part in the Seminar and made their presentations.

The attendees took the opportunity to discuss the following:

  • general issues on nuclear safety of nuclear power plants
  • nuclear safety principles
  • nuclear reactors of various types, peculiarities of their design, repair, refurbishment and operation
  • specific issues of nuclear risks management
  • operating risks of I&C devices as well as radiation monitoring equipment at nuclear power plants
  • specific aspects of the usage of structural materials at nuclear power plants and reactors
  • robotic technology for severe accident management at nuclear power plants,
  • equipment reliability
  • long-term health effects of radiation
  • nuclear safety culture and cyber security at nuclear power plants

 The Seminar provided the opportunity not only to exchange views, ideas and practical skills on conducting insurance risks inspections, but also to work out recommendations for operating organizations and for a new draft Guidelines on safety culture for NPPs, which may be recommended for implementation by all national pools of the International pooling system.
Overall the event was highly appreciated by all attendees. The majority supported the idea of holding such Seminars to discuss a lot of other aspects of insurance surveys, assessing and analyzing insurance risks of constructions, operating process and decommissioning of nuclear facilities all over the world.
