An International Insurance Survey at Heysham 1 NPP

An International Insurance Survey at Heysham 1 NPP, UK, was held 6-7 January, 2015 (Heysham 1 NPP, located in Heysham, Lancashire, England, operated by EDF Energy).

The representatives of International pooling system participated in the Survey:

Nuclear Safety, Operations & Third-Party Liability (NSO TPL):

• Fred Gatte Nuclear Risk Insurers Ltd (Team Leader)

• Artem Zakharov Ukrainian nuclear pool

Machinery Breakdown:

• Thorsten Leubert German nuclear pool

Fire Protection:

• Sergey Babenko, Russian nuclear Pool.

The main goal of the Inspection was:

• To assess insurance risks of Heysham 1 NPP in order to arrange nuclear third party and MD insurance cover
• To survey the main facilities, equipment and systems at NPP
• To discuss and analyze current operating safety level of the equipment and systems at NPP as well as the fire safety level

The experts appreciated the modernization process at NPP and measures, which improved safety operating level.

Following the results of the inspection the experts presented preliminary observations and recommendations, which in accordance with standard procedure will be forwarded to the leaders of Heysham 1 NPP as soon as the Survey report is finalized.

The inspectors thanked the staff of NPP Heysham 1 and EDF Energy, the owner of the NPP, for the high level of organization of the Survey.

Heysham 1 and Heysham 2, both of the advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) type with two reactors each. The first reactor of Heysham 1 commencing operations in 1983 and the second reactor following in 1984. Its generating capacity is 575 MWe each. Total 1150 MWe.
