An International Insurance Survey at Vandellòs-2 NPP

An International Insurance Reinspection at Vandellos 2 NPP, located on the Mediterranean coast in Catalonia (Spain), was held on 02-03 December 2014. The representatives of the Spanish, British, Russian and Czech Nuclear Insurance Pools participated in the Survey. RANI was represented by Mr.Vladimir Vashchilo, Deputy Technical Director.

The Survey was mainly aimed to assess the insurance risk of Vandellos-2 NPP in order to arrange nuclear third party insurance cover in foreign Nuclear Insurance Pools of the International Pooling System.

At the meetings the leaders and technical specialists of NPP provided information on current operating activity at the site, discussed opportunities and further development of Vandellos-2 NPP, focused on implementation of the recommendations of the previous Survey, informed the experts about the results of the inspections carried out by regulator – IAEA and WANO.

The inspectors investigated reactor compartment, turbine house, main control room, emergency control room; checked systems supporting safety operation level of NPP and other facilities of the site.

The experts outlined some issues, concerning operation process at NPP, which require detailed analysis to work out recommendations for further improvement of NPP’s activities.

The final report on the results of the inspection will be provided in three months.

NPP Vandellos 2 is located on beautiful Costa Dorada coast (Tarragona, Catalonia) 130 km from Barcelona. The station's owners are: 72% Endesa and 28% Iberdrola.
The Unit with electrical capacity of 1087 MW is equipped by reactor installation with Westinghouse three-loop PWR, Large Dry Contaiment and Westinghouse steam turbine. Design service life of the Unit is 40 years. The Unit was put into operation 08.03.1988 (issued license is valid until 2020).
